for brass quintet (2024)

Heptad Dance was written as a lively concert opener for Quintessence Brass Quintet, inspired simply by the opportunity to write directly for players I know very well as a veteran member the group. The piece explores rhythmic drive and asymmetry, rooted in a steady 7/8 meter that gives the music its name (“heptad” meaning a group of seven). This energetic piece draws subtle inspiration from John Cheetham’s “Scherzo,” with crisp articulations, motivic interplay, and constantly shifting key centers to create a sense of forward momentum and cohesion. Heptad Dance emphasizes ensemble precision while providing short soloistic opportunities for all performers, and it is well-suited for collegiate or skilled high school brass quintets looking for a vibrant, contemporary addition to their program.
