for concert band (2024)
Grade 5

This piece was conceived as a personal exploration of midcentury American concert band traditions, drawing inspiration from composers like William Schuman, Ingolf Dahl, and Morton Gould. Written with the intent of serving as a concert opener, it’s ideally suited for advanced high school or intermediate-level college wind ensembles. The music features vibrant bitonality and rich harmonic textures, with an emphasis on maintaining harmonic clarity within instrument families. Listeners may hear echoes of works like William Schuman’s George Washington Bridge, with similarly driving momentum and layered sonorities. At its core, the piece is both a nod to tradition and a step toward expanding the expressive vocabulary of the wind band.
