Unfolding Horizons is a musical depiction of a journey around the state of Michigan, inspired by my years spent there as an undergraduate at Michigan State University. The piece captures the sense of discovery I felt while exploring Michigan’s diverse and striking landscapes—from rolling hills and quiet valleys to flowing rivers, vibrant forests, and the vast, untamed shores of Lake Michigan.
As the music unfolds, listeners will hear everything from the calm stillness of a glassy lake to powerful surges of waves crashing along the shore. Each section reveals a new “horizon,” a new perspective that builds upon the last, mirroring my experiences at Michigan State and life’s continual journey of change, growth, and renewal.
Unfolding Horizons is written for medium-advanced high school or collegiate wind ensembles, who want a short but well-rounded addition to any concert program.
